Weekly Writing Check-In: The Return

Thought I should bring this back from the blog topic grave. Until a few months ago I used to "check in" every Sunday to talk about how my writing was going. Back then it was mostly a self-motivation type of thing. The more I did it, the less I needed it to be motivated to write. Since doing this full-time it's just become natural for me to write anywhere between 1-3k words a day. (The rest of my work day is editing, outlining, formatting, marketing, etc. as necessary depending on the stage of a story's development.) But I've noticed lately that my blog has become a bit... sparse. Outside of release announcements and sales I don't seem to talk about much anymore. That's mostly because I am usually so focused on work and "real life" that I forget maybe readers want to read other things as well on my blog.

So I think I'll try to start this  up again. Not as a motivator to get me writing, but as a way for me to tell you about my current WIPs.

Right now I am working on what will be the first RR release of the year. Technically it's a part of the RR series, although it doesn't focus on Reina and Aiko as we are all used to. Instead I am letting the minor characters Kaori and Haruka have the whole spotlight by giving them a novel about their entire relationship thus far - from their first meeting until "present day" in the RR universe. That's about three years I am covering in one novel. Right now the thing I am struggling with the most is the pacing - I mean, three years! The longest a RR novel has covered is about a few months. Definitely less than a year. It's a new change of pace I have to plan and write, and I admit it's been a challenge!

The other thing that is new for me is that I am literally rewriting some scenes from SEIKOU and KOIBUMI. Literally. Rewriting. From another character's POV (there's the rub.) This book will cover the breakup that occurs offscreen in SEIKOU, leading Reina and Haruka to first meet. The difference is that I am rewriting it from Haruka's POV! It's both mindnumbingly horrendous and super fun at the same time. I have to find ways to use the same actions and dialogue to give a fresh spin. It's something I've never done before!

All of this, though, is happening while there was a bit of an allergy blitz in my house this week. Our Xmas tree finally bit the dust and released a score of allergens that left me bedridden for a couple of days - massive sore throat, congestion, and terrible fatigue. (Fun fact: I was hospitalized as a small child because of a Christmas tree allergy, so yay!) I've mostly grown out of SEVERE allergies to the, well, world outside (if it has pollen, I am allergic.) But this was so bad that it felt like I was a kid again. So I am  a bit behind right now... but uh, at least I'm caught up in my 3DS games?

I'm gonna take this clear brain of mine and get back to the some serious writing. And some serious Pokemon battling, because my work reward system is totally awesome.

OUT NOW: REN'AI RENSAI: The First Collection

For the first time the first THREE novels of the REN’AI RENSAI lesbian romance series are available in one shot! The set includes “DAISUKI.”, “HATSUKOI.” and “SEIKOU.” for the low price of $9.99. Not only is that a savings of four dollars, but you pretty much get book 1 for free!

Praise for the REN’AI RENSAI series:

“While I am a fan of erotica to an extent, the plot of Daisuki really engages the reader and made it not only fun to read but created believable characters that you care for and are eager to follow their stories.” - Brittany Barr

“It can be hard in erotic romance to strike a good balance between sexy and emotionally satisfying, but “Daisuki.” does it beautifully.” - Alexis Latshaw

“On the surface, it is a book about hot sex between two Japanese lesbians. If you dig a bit deeper, then you will find it is also a book about Eastern vs Western cultural norms, relationship status differences, societal expectations, family shame and honor, and many LGBT issues including sexual privacy, gender identity, and marginalization.” - Michele James

“This book has two things any erotic romance needs: a compelling conflict and a lot of steamy sex.” - Elizabeth Twist

“Open relationships never seem to appear in fiction—certainly not long-term, committed, and realistic interpretations of them, at least. I found the details of their arrangement intriguing and plausible; as I previously said, I also strongly felt their overpowering love for one another, even when they faced challenges. They fit well together, and I loved it.” - Morgan Bauman

REN’AI RENSAI: THE FIRST COLLECTION can be purchased at the following fine retailers:

Amazon - B&N - Kobo <—coming soon as soon as they are processed.

Deleted Scene from "SEIKOU."!

It's not unusual for me to cut entire scenes from my manuscripts before they make it to publication. Most of the time I have no desire to share them, and I'm pretty  sure you have no reason to read them. But I'm particularly fond of these full scene that got cut from SEIKOU, the latest novel in the REN'AI RENSAI series. In it Reina gets "sick mother" duty, and, as usual, hashes it out with her mother-in-law Junko, who has a fever and isn't holding back the hate.

I originally wrote it to connect to one of the final scenes. However, editor told me it wasn't necessary, and I agreed pretty quickly. Thus, it got hacked. But not before making it through most of the final edits.

It's probably not too spoilery if you haven't read SEIKOU yet. Hope you enjoy!

She awoke to streams of sunlight coming through her bedroom window. At first she stirred from a coma brought on by pain killers and strong tea, but as soon as she saw it hanging above her, pillow in hand and hovering above her face, she let out a hair shearing scream.
“Shut up, banshee.” Reina finished fluffing up her mother-in-law’s pillow and tossed it onto the other side of the bed. “What? Did you think I was going to kill you?”
Junko huddled beneath her comforter, her bloodshot eyes boring a tube of venom into Reina’s psyche. “Demon!” She flung a hand into the air and smacked it against the wall – a calligraphy print shook from the force. “Demon, be gone from my room!”
“Oh, I’ve graduated to demon now, how lovely!” Reina slunk into a wicker chair beside the sliding glass door. She tossed a leg over the other and leaned against an arm.
“I don’t know who let you into my room, she-male, but – ”
“Mother!” Aiko came to the rescue, her chest winded from running up the stairs. “What’s going on in here? Did I hear you screaming?”
Reina shrugged while her mother-in-law continued to hyperventilate as if someone really had been trying to kill her. You’re not so lucky today. Reina was fairly certain that was illegal, and the ire she would receive from Aiko alone also deterred her.
“Ai-chaaaan!” Junko extended her arms like a baby reaching for her mother, an eerie role swapping. “My dear Ai-chan, somebody let this she-male into my bedroom, and she tried to kill me! Suffocate me with my own pillow!”
Aiko looked between her mother and her spouse, disbelief clouding her already harried face. Eventually she focused on Reina, who struggled to maintain her composure.
“I didn’t try to kill her,” she mumbled. “I was being nice and fluffing her pillow for her when she woke up and started screaming.”
“She lies! Don’t let her trick you, Ai-chan! She has the devil inside her!”
One silent groan later and Aiko reached her verdict. “Come on, Reina. I need help downstairs.”
Great. Punishment. But it beat babysitting the mother-in-law from Homophobia Land.
Reina followed Aiko out of the room. They went downstairs, where a vacuum cleaner loitered in the hall and dusting materials littered both the Japanese style room and the living area. Yes, punishment in the form of house cleaning. Still better than that asshole.
“Sit down, I’ll get some water.” Aiko disappeared into the kitchen.
Reina hovered between the hallway and the living area. What was Aiko up to? Either Reina was in time out or about to get another scolding. How was it her fault that Junko was evil incarnate and one of the nastiest people she ever met? Reina slumped down at the table for the first time in twenty years – the first time had been when she first visited the Takeuchi house under the pretense of “just a friend” and was grilled about her family life. Junko’s most excellent advice back then was for Reina to quit her job and get married.
Since then, Junko remained an obstacle to Aiko’s happiness, a truth Reina had no idea how to fix. For five years their relationship was a secret to Aiko’s family. In those years, Reina had been treated with courtesy and admitted to dinners and small parties. After they moved in together, however, Junko stumbled upon them in a heated embrace, and the panic and derision continued from that day on. Reina didn’t know which was worse: lying and hiding, or coming out and being hated.
Aiko swore the latter was easier to bear. As she returned with two glasses of water, Reina imagined a life in which her wife couldn’t tell everyone and anyone how in love she was. That’s how she had always been. Even her name, “Child of Love,” loaned itself to Aiko’s big heart and deep naiveté.
“I want to go home,” Reina said after her wife sat down next to her. “Don’t make me put up with her any longer.”
“I’m sorry about all of this. You think I enjoy hearing what she calls you to your face?” Aiko put a hand on Reina’s back.
That touch offered only a blip of reassurance. “Well, it’s never going to get any better. Just let me go home.”
“I wish I could.” The hand rubbed up and down Reina’s sore muscles. “But I need you to help me move some of the furniture around. Then you can go home.”
Great. Was this supposed to help her image around Junko? Not that Reina was sure she cared about her “image” anymore in the Takeuchi house. What was there to salvage? Her pride? She agreed with a small huff to do Aiko’s bidding. The only reason she caved in and came that day, on a rare corporate holiday, was because Aiko begged her to in a small fit of panic. Early that morning she received a phone call from Saki, distressed that she couldn’t go to their mother who had apparently relapsed with a fever. Reina smelled deceit kilometers away. Turned out, Junko only had a minor fever, but her brain was still fried.
“It’ll be fine,” Aiko said, and patted Reina’s knee. “I know you two don’t get along…”
            “Wow, that’s an understatement.”
“…But you have to remember she’s from another time when…women weren’t supposed to be doing what we do.”
Reina didn’t know how she was supposed to swallow that stream of bullshit. “What are you talking about? Lesbians have been around for as long as two women have ever been near each other. And yeah, that goes for Japan, too.” Reina had met her fellow Japanese women in utter denial that it happened within their own borders. “It’s fashionable to be gay in the West.” She would hear that phrase until the day she died. “It’s not our fault if your mother chooses to cover her ears and spout vitriol because she’s bitter her daughter didn’t marry some rich guy!” Reina was over the name-calling. She had been called shit since the day Junko saw them tonguing in their living room.
“Anata,” Aiko said softly, her voice carrying the one pet-name between them like a bandage, “I love you. Remind yourself that. And maybe stay away from her if you can help.”
No amount of “love” could shoulder the burden of putting up with Junko’s hate. Reina knew that, and she suspected Aiko knew it as well. Such were their fates, however, in a world punishing them for following their hearts. And no matter how much Reina reminded herself that she was “loved,” it didn’t cover the fact she was also hated, not only because of her sex, but because of the sex she wasn’t, either.
Sometimes Reina felt the most exposed as a woman around Junko Takeuchi.

OUT NOW: "SEIKOU." Book 3 of the REN'AI RENSAI series

Amazon .:. Kobo .:. Smashwords
I'm very excited to announce the third novel release of the REN'AI RENSAI series! "Seikou." is thus far my favorite release. Of course, I love all my works (otherwise I wouldn't bother with them!) but I have a lot of ~feelings~ about "Seikou." I've never been one to shy away from bending the conventions of a genre. Even though some people may not be happy with the overall plot (infidelity) because it's a touchy subject for a lot, it's something I really wanted to do and was an inevitable direction for the relationship of Aiko and Reina. My main goal was to tell a story with that at its core plot...and pull it off with the HFN. There are a lot of highly emotional (and sexy) scenes along the way. To say I am proud of this story is an understatement.

That said, please enjoy the blurb and excerpt below!

---

“We’re going to try an exercise,” Dr. Katou announced, her legs crossed once more. “Its goal is to help you two better understand how you see each other.”
            This’ll be grand.
“Reina, let’s begin with you. Please select one word that you think best describes your wife.”
A word? Just a word? While Reina was a champion of brevity, she could hardly sum up everything that was “Aiko Takeuchi” into one measly word. Reina’s vocabulary wasn’t that fantastic. How was she supposed to describe her own precious wife, the one she had so apparently wronged, with one word? What would she focus on? Her beauty, despite its aging? Her homemaking prowess? Her sweetness? Her trademark naiveté that had gradually chipped away over the years, the more Reina influenced her?
“I guess it would be arasagashi.”
Aiko gasped, and Dr. Katou “hmmmed” like she always did when things were about to get interesting. “Arasagashi?” Aiko repeated. “Is that so? You think I am so picky?”
“Un.” She hadn’t been in the early years of their relationship, but Reina gauged Aiko’s habit of picking out every fault in her partner began around the time they moved in together and she adopted the occupation of homemaker. The day that happened was the same day Aiko went from a fun and curious girl to a ranting woman, as if she were determined to become the stereotypical housewife who constantly treated her husband like a careless child. But like her diminishing naiveté, it too had been gradual, enough for Reina to ignore it while continuing to enjoy the things she loved most about Aiko.
She was halfway through spitting out a testy response when Dr. Katou cut her off. “And how about you? What one word would you use to describe your partner?”
Reina should have seen it coming from beyond the Japanese Alps, from the way Aiko’s jaw set with a determined, slightly arasagashi-like stance. She should have seen it coming, but she didn’t.
            “Seikou.”
Without context, Reina had no idea how to take that word. Seikou in itself had seemingly endless definitions. She had half a mind to ask Aiko to write it down in Japanese kanji so she could see the intended version.
“Seikou, eh? So I’m a steel manufacturer?”
No surprise when Aiko didn’t laugh at that joke.
            “Am I a big success?”
“You know which one I mean.”
            “Hardly.”
I know. Reina could see the layers written in the lines of Aiko’s face. Denial kept them at bay. If Reina faced the true meanings Aiko intended, then she had to confront the same accusation she had flung in her wife’s face one week before. I’ve always known.
“Your character is rotten. Rotten with sex.”
Oh, not one meaning, but two! And how they intertwined was so affronting that Reina leaped up in sheer shock. “Seikou, is it?” she snapped. “If you knew my character was so consumed with sex, then why did you get into a relationship with me, huh?”
“How could I have known?” Aiko retained her nonplussed demeanor, that same evil one turning Reina’s life upside-down. “How does an inexperienced girl recognize that sort of sordid character consumed with sex? It’s not normal. You should never choose other women over me!”
“Choose women… over you… seikou! Shinjiran!” Reina paced back and forth even after Dr. Katou gently suggested she sit down again. “I don’t believe it! It’s like I told you last week. You’ve been trying to change me over all this time!”
“I have done no such thing!”
“But don’t you wish you could? Don’t you wish you could make me normal?” Reina glowered above her wife. “It’s bad enough your oversexed spouse can’t keep her legs closed, right? She’s also got a whole box of other problems, all the way down to her inability to have sex like a woman!”
            “Reina!”
“Don’t deny it! You want me to fit into your heteronormative dreams! You got your marriage, and now you want…” Reina choked and stepped back. All her gender-infused demons came crawling up her legs and took root in her stomach, and there was Aiko gawking at her in horror. She hates me. Reina stumbled over her empty chair. I’m a monster. She couldn’t breathe. I’m neither man nor woman. “You want me to die inside just to fit your mold.”
Reina collapsed into her chair and held her head between her hands, forcing back the sobs wanting to burst out and humiliate her. The demons inside her taunted her identity as neither man nor woman, their cackles drowning out the sounds of Aiko’s panicked declarations of love happening a meter away.
“No, Reina, no!” Aiko grabbed a shaking hand and parted drooping hair. “I would never! I would never change you! I don’t care about your libido, or our lifestyle!” Chairs screeched backwards as Aiko shoved out of her seat. “I only want you to keep your promise to me!”
Her kisses were warm and wet on Reina’s face, but it wasn’t enough. Not when she now knew her wife’s summation of her. Seikou. Everything wrapped in the core of Reina’s identity, from her carefree attitude to the way she tended to women around her – those beautiful, loving women – was a divide between them. I didn’t mean to hurt you, Ai-chan. Reina didn’t want to feel the affection showered upon her. So why are you hurting me?
